When it comes to leading the team of talented artists at Arkane Studios, one of my guiding principles is: <em>Art is not graphics.</em> Even if you have the best technology in the world, if your design is weak, the final results will be weak. You will have graphics with no clear message. With Dishonored 2, we once again tried to raise the bar with art and design, and it began with the setting. When building Karnaca, we considered every detail – from the tallest mountain peak to the smallest item tucked away in the corner of a room. Wretched creatures like Stefano Valentini, an artist with dark proclivities and unbounded imagination. You’ll see examples of his work scattered throughout Union – from grisly photographs of his victims, to the “moment of death” tableaus he creates, capturing the last seconds of a person’s life in a tangible, looping scene. Scattered throughout the world of The Evil Within 2, you can find whispers from the past – events that Sebastian would prefer to forget. One such whisper can be found in a rather nondescript house we explored during our recent hands-on time with the game. And it was through this whisper that we learned even more about Sebastian’s fractured mind – including new insights into Sebastian’s mental state after the events of the first game. This is just one of the many locations you can visit in Union if you choose to explore, and all of them will provide you with certain benefits, whether they are much-needed resources or (like this one) a deeper dive into the game’s lore.
