Guide to Redfall: Slay Alone or Squad Up

Redfall Standard Edition Box Front

Redfall

The open world of Redfall is rife with challenges, mysteries and bloodsucking vampires.

Thankfully, you won’t have to face it on your own. Redfall offers the opportunity to play with up to three friends, allowing players to mix and match from a roster of unique heroes with diverse skillsets. But that doesn’t mean the team at Arkane Austin has forgotten their roots. Arkane has always been known for crafting narrative-driven, single-player campaigns that allow players unprecedented levels of agency, and Redfall is carrying on that tradition. While this is Arkane’s first co-op experience, you can also play through the entire game on your own.

Slay Alone

“A huge emphasis for Redfall has been the solo experience, in keeping with Arkane’s passions,” says Co-Creative/Studio Director Harvey Smith. “All the games we’ve made overlap in a bunch of creative ways, though no two are exactly alike. Redfall is an open world game, but it can be soloed with any of the heroes. The pace becomes more exploratory; you can use recon and stealth to gather info on encounters and avoid enemies or get the drop on them.”

Should you choose to play alone, you won’t be joined by AI teammates, making it a truly solo experience. You set the pace. You determine the strategies. Want to go on a sightseeing tour of Redfall? It might be a bit dangerous with all the vampires and cultists, but go for it! There is an island full of mysteries to uncover. In true Arkane fashion, the world around you is constantly telling you stories, and these stories can be enjoyed no matter how many people are playing the game.

Squad Up

For the players who don’t want to go it alone, there are some gameplay benefits to teaming up. Whereas playing solo forces you to rely solely on yourself, forming a squad allows you to combine strengths with other players and test out strategies only available when you’re part of a team.

“A core pillar of the game is familiarity,” says Lead Producer Aaron Carter. “For our heroes, that’s building that sense of kinship over time. You get to see a little bit of it in the trailer, and the game really emphasizes that through systems that develop the connective tissues between characters as you play together. Our approach to multiplayer really highlights that by encouraging players to enjoy the campaign with friends or people you know. The goal is that being able to invite friends to join you on the journey enhances that experience by letting you share in it together and approach things in a whole new way.”

And don’t worry about someone on your squad choosing your favorite character. Everyone on the team can play as different heroes, or you can double-up (or even triple-up or quadruple-up) on a specific character. Maybe you all want to play as Jacob, but with different loadouts and upgrades? No matter how you choose to play the game, Redfall will be waiting for you.
