Redfall
Redfall’s vampires have a lot in common with the vampires of yore… but in true Arkane fashion, they come with some surprises, too.
Fangs? Check. Dramatic fashion sense? Check. Thirst for blood? Mega check. Power to push back the tides and block out the sun? That’s a new one.
“Vampires are such a cool and fun monster to play with,” says Business Director Susan Kath. “Since ‘vampires’ have existed for millennia in folklore worldwide, everyone has some idea of what a vampire is and assumptions about what that means. Traditional vampires are the monsters inhabiting our childhood closets, the dark shadow sliding by on the path behind us at night, the evil we imagined lurking behind the windows of the abandoned mansion on the hill. The vampires of Redfall play into some of those assumptions, but by no means all, bringing a modern take on the folklore that is uniquely Arkane.”
Apex Predators
“Our vampires are not some aspirational fantasy,” says Co-Creative Director/Studio Director Harvey Smith. “They’re predatory monsters who feed on the vulnerable to make themselves more powerful.”
Redfall’s vampires aren’t your typical bloodsuckers. They were created by science – a longevity experiment that gave them their particular version of immortality – and they’re continuing to evolve. After their transformation, some of them develop powerful abilities and become specialized vampires. As you move up the hierarchy from the standard “minions,” you’ll find hulking vampires with the physical strength to rip your squad to shreds, watchful vampires that serve as a sort of alarm system for their cohorts, and other bloodsuckers like the Angler. This devious vampire will single you out and drag you away from your teammates if you’re not careful. (Don’t worry, if you’re playing alone or are unable to get help from your teammates, you can still free yourself from the Angler’s spear with a little effort.)
“If you decide to play with friends, sticking together will be essential for survival,” explains Co-Creative Director Ricardo Bare. “The heroes are stronger as a group and the vampire threat ramps up as more players join the game. Running off on your own is the quickest way to get snatched and killed.”
And of course, when you have a clear hierarchy of power, there has to be something at the top, right? All the way at the top of the vampiric food chain are the beings responsible for blocking out the sun, pushing back the tides and much more…
Use Your Brain
All the vampires are dangerous, but perhaps more importantly, they’re smart. They’re clever manipulators who have drawn many of Redfall’s citizens into a form of servitude. These cultists who follow them now patrol the island, hunting down the few remaining survivors and serving their new overlords.
While rushing into an encounter guns-blazing is always an option, it might not always be the right option. Without proper scouting, what might look like a simple showdown with the vampires’ cultists could end up a lot more deadly. You never know what might be lurking in the shadows, and let’s be honest, with the sun blocked out Redfall is mostly shadows. Be smart and plan your attacks carefully if you want to survive on the treacherous island.
