Look at the person to your left. Now look at the person to your right.
oon Squad, the largest, craziest and most prevalent faction in the wasteland. You’ll be able to tell based on their neon hair, affection for explosives, and inability to say anything without screaming it. Let’s be real, they’re probably both members of the Goon Squad. In that case you’re already dead, and we’re really sorry about that. Unless, of course, you’re Walker. Then you might stand a chance. You’ll know for sure when RAGE 2 launches on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on May 14.
Squad Goals
“The Goon Squad is the most prolific and widespread of the bandit factions in RAGE 2,” says Senior Narrative Designer Loke Wallmo. “In the first RAGE, they were called the Wasted Clan. In the Authority Wars, the Wasted Clan sided with the Authority, but were left behind when the Authority retreated underground. In the post-war campaign known at the Western Derby, they were virtually eradicated and stayed that way until recently, when they had a massive comeback and become a major force to be reckoned with.”
The Goons exist in almost complete anarchy, with only the roughest of hierarchical structures holding them together. They’re chaotic, nihilistic and fearless – a combination that makes them particularly lethal.
“Goons enter combat in a howling fury of blazing guns, improvised melee weapons, rockets and grenades,” says Wallmo. “They will rarely pause to seek cover or even attempt coordination, and taunts and acts of suicidal recklessness are met with approval and praise from their comrades.”
Even their weapons are a display of their insane dedication to thrills. They actively remove safeties, add more explosives, and modify their vehicles and guns to ensure maximum destructive power, often to such an extreme that it poses a threat to the wielder.
Home Turf
Many of the factions in RAGE 2 have areas they call home – a cheery little corner of the world where they can wreak havoc and murder to their hearts’ content. The Goon Squad is a little bit different. “The individual gangs of Goons lead a nomadic lifestyle, traveling like a locust swarm, looting and destroying everything in their paths,” says Wallmo. “The only apparent goal of the Goon Squad is growth. ‘Join us or die’ seems to be the only form of diplomacy known to them and would account for their progress.”
Because of this nomadic structure, you’re likely to encounter Goons in most regions of the world. Outside of their normal turf in the Torn Plains, they can be found warring with other factions in a constant bid for power and territory. A desire for old world technology frequently sends them out to regions like the Dune Sea, where they’re locked in a deadly rivalry with the Immortal Shrouded faction.
The Goon Squad uses massive convoys to transport goods and to patrol any territory they perceive to be their own. Goon Squad convoys are powered by feltrite, making them highly volatile and highly dangerous. These mobile fortresses are composed of small, fast attack bikes; medium-sized muscle cars; and a daunting, heavily armored convoy leader. Take one convoy out of commission and it will be replaced by an even tougher convoy. Going head-to-head with a convoy is highly risky, but the rewards are worth it.
