Buy Game“We make the games we want to play and it’s a blast,” declares Game Director Todd Howard.
That’s a good thing, considering the amount of time the team at Bethesda Game Studios spends together, creating massive worlds for both the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series.
It’s also a good thing for the fans, many of whom spend hundreds of hours immersed in BGS games. But it’s still nothing compared with the tenure of the core team behind Fallout 4. “We’ve been working together for 10 years on the Fallout series,” states Lead Designer Emil Pagliarulo, whose history with the studio dates back to Bloodmoon, the second official expansion for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. The long-term commitment of BGS panelists Pagliarulo (12 years), Todd Howard (21 years), Istvan Pely (17 years), Jeff Gardiner (10 years), as well as many others has been instrumental to the design philosophy and studio culture that’s produced award-winning games like Fallout 3, Skyrim, and Oblivion.
With Fallout 4 releasing globally on November 10 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, we took a deep dive into the development process behind one of the most anticipated games of all time. Watch Part 1 of our panel for all kinds of insights into the game as well as life at Bethesda Game Studios.
With Fallout 4’s development, BGS presented themselves with a new challenge: introducing a voiced protagonist that could exemplify the emotions of a player-created character. To pull this off, the studio began a rigorous audition process to find the right male and female lead for the game, culminating in the selection of actors Brian T. Delaney and Courtenay Taylor.
“I remember I looked it up… July 9, 2013, was my first day of work,” recalls Delaney. “I remember, this was going to be a big deal.”
In the video below, learn more about their process – including the delivery of more than 13,000 lines of dialogue each (Fallout 4 features more than 111,000 total lines) – and what it was like to work with Bethesda Game Studios and voice director Kal-El Bogdanove.
