Ghostwire: Tokyo OST available now - and coming soon to turntables!

CRAFTING GHOSTWIRE’S SOUND

Balancing a setting of contemporary Tokyo with elements of folklore, ‘tradition meets modernity’ is a common thread in Ghostwire: Tokyo – not just throughout the game, but even in its sound.

“We produced (Ghostwire) taking this motif into great consideration,” says Masatoshi Yanagi, Sound Designer at Tango Gameworks. “We wanted to include this sort of ‘mismatch.’ For example, we actively used traditional Japanese instruments and musical scales, but also mixed in digital sounds and noise created with synthesizers and used it as like a collage of sound modified from waveforms of sampling. I think it ended up with a distinctive unique soundtrack fitting a title set in modern Tokyo.”

When describing the game’s sound, Yanagi likens it to yaminabe (闇鍋), or ‘dark hot pot,’ referring to a style of hot pot where the ingredients are kept secret beforehand and sometimes literally prepared in the dark. “We made it as a hodge-podge of traditional Japanese sounds and modern sounds. There are songs that are arranged from doyo (童謡), or Japanese nursery songs, in a Ghostwire: Tokyo style, as well as traditional Japanese instruments, dark distorted synthesizer sounds and some post-classical mood music,” Yanagi explains. “I am also very much inspired by gagaku (雅楽) music and music used in noh (能) plays, as well music from 80s’ and 90s’ Japanese anime, heavy metal (my personal favorite), rock and the so-called post classical genre such as Max Richter and Ólafur Arnalds.”

Both versions also include unique album artwork created by the art team at Tango, making them a treat for the eyes next to your record player.
