It doesn’t take much for a major pop culture franchise like DOOM to spread its influence.

Let’s take a look at some of the series’ more interesting (or just flat-out odd) cameos, both within and outside the sphere of video games.

4. Tony Hawk’s Demon Slayer

When describing the fast the fluid action for DOOM (2016), DOOM Creative Director, Hugo Martin, once said that players should feel like “Bruce Lee with a shotgun on a skateboard.” Believe it or not, this wasn’t the first instance of combining DOOM with skate culture. The two worlds collided over a decade prior in 2002 when Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 made its way to PCs.

While the original third entry in the premier skateboarding series was developed by Neversoft, the PC version was made by Gearbox Software. Known nowadays for developing the Borderlands series, Gearbox was always a household name for FPS fans thanks to several well-received expansions and ports for the legendary Valve shooter, Half-Life.

With that kind of background, it’s little surprise the developers wanted to offer an homage to the game that basically put first-person shooters on the map. And what better way to do it than by offering a secret skater wearing a very distinctive set of green armor and protective helmet? Making things even sweeter, players needed to enter the code “idkfa” in the cheat menu to unlock the ‘DOOM GUY’ – the same cheat code that unlocks every weapon and key and maxes out armor and ammo in DOOM (1993) and DOOM II.
