Top 5 Demons of DOOM - #4: The Cacodemon

Choosing a favorite demon from DOOM is like choosing a favorite child.

They can be challenging, generally incomprehensible and vicious at times, but each is special and you can’t help but love them all equally.

Nevertheless, we’ve assembled a list of the five biggest, baddest, and/or simply best that the legions of Hell have to offer. Got a personal favorite? Let us know your favorites in the comments below!

4. THE CACODEMON

There’s just... something about the Cacodemon. It’s not the fastest demon in DOOM history, nor the biggest. It’s not the most aggressive or the hardiest or even the loudest. But it’s so very alien, so hulking and ponderously threatening, that the otherworldy orb is virtually become a mascot for DOOM itself.

From its first appearance in DOOM (1993), the Cacodemon has maintained a similar design: a vaguely spherical, floating monstrosity with slavering jaws, copious horns, and a baleful glare. DOOM 64’s version added a pair of arms (complete with broken shackles, somehow making this thing even more terrifying) and a more devilish arrangement of horns. DOOM 3’s incarnation featured an exposed brain – which, ew – along with a plethora of extra eyes and dangling tentacles.

It’s DOOM 2016’s version, however, that takes the cake. Incorporating the more terrifying features of Cacodemons past, the modern take of this classic enemy comes with ridiculously large teeth and withered appendages to really drive home this is a threat worth prioritizing.

The Cacodemon is more than an iconic design, of course. This ball of baddie packs a seriously nasty punch. The projectiles released from its glowing maw are bad news on their own, but be unlucky enough to get in melee range of a Cacodemon and you’ll learn those teeth ain’t just for show.

Also? Cacodemons tend to hunt in packs. So, you know, good luck with that.
