The Guts and Gore of DOOM Glory Kills
DOOM (2016)
If you don’t at least wince the first time you see you an explosive Glory Kill performed on a meaty Mancubus, then you might just be a demon yourself.
Either way, these brutal finishing moves are a big part of DOOM, which is why we spent some time with the team at id Software discussing where the idea came from and how they work. As Executive Producer Marty Stratton shares, it developed out the notion of “push-forward combat” – a great way to quickly and efficiently finish a close-quarter engagement while incorporating melee combat.
The biggest takeaway? Not only are these fun to watch (and rewarding to boot) but they’re much more than a handful of static finishers. Glory Kills change depending on your position; they can be triggered in a very strategic manner; and they’re built to keep the game fast and fluid. “We have strict time limits on how long they can last,” says Chief Technology Officer Robert Duffy. “They’re hundreds of milliseconds, just because you want to keep the player moving.” Find out more about DOOM Glory Kills in this new video.
DOOM will blast its way onto Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in spring 2016.
