Full-size Elder Scrolls, boxes filled with thousands of bottle caps, incredibly detailed art – on the list goes on. But Bethesda Game Studios Senior Artist Josh Jay recently passed along a creation that surpassed our wildest expectations.
We present this mounted Deathclaw head – now on display at Bethesda Game Studios – created by freelance artist and Cleveland native, Rachel Rudkowski.
We recently caught up with Rachel to learn more about the work that went into making it.
The Deathclaw bust you sent us is incredible! What inspired you to create it?
Thank you so much. I had a complete blast working on this project. I was having trouble coming up with a new sculpture idea, but my brother Alan – a huge Fallout fan – recommended the Deathclaw. I've always thought it was such an amazing creature. The project started off small and grew into something much larger.
We’ve heard the Deathclaw had working animatronics prior to arriving at our office? Is that true?
My first two copies were made to be display pieces. However, I had an animatronics class at school and my teacher loved Fallout. It was my first time building anything that moved aside from remote-controlled cars. My teacher was very dedicated to helping me make this possible. It was a great learning experience, and seeing this creature move was just too awesome.
What other projects are you working on? Any other Bethesda projects?
I've been working on a lot of relief sculptures and paintings lately. I do love the Scamps from The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, so maybe I’ll get to that in the future. You can follow my latest works on Instagram at rachelrudyartistry.
The décor of your office/home/studio must be pretty interesting. What reaction do you generally get from friends/newcomers when they see your work?
That's a fun one. My apartment is filled with lots of my art and projects. I always enjoy the different reactions I get from people who see my work. From paintings to monster heads all over the place… it generally leads to some fun facial expressions. I've recently moved to the Carolinas and am looking to renovate my studio space soon.
