Ready to jump in and start striking Visionaries off your “To-Kill” list? Here are some handy tips to send you on your way.
Know when to hold ’em and when to fold ’em: Sometimes survival depends on switching up your tactics. Once you’ve unlocked Colt’s Reprise ability, you’ll have two strikes before you’re out and restarting the day. Die once (or twice) and you’ll be able to use your revival to try a different tactic. Sometimes it’s better to skirt a fight and look for better gear than get involved too early on. Reprise refills between time periods, and you can also refill your charges by taking out an invading Julianna.
Only as good as your gun: You should always be on the lookout for better gear. The quality of a weapon is indicated by the color of its icon, with purple and gold being the best of the best. Purple and Gold guns come with their own special perks that can completely change how the gun performs. Also, the higher the quality, the more Trinket slots it will have, allowing you to further customize these already awesome weapons. Trinkets can be found all over the island and can have major effects. Some amplify your own skills and attributes, while others enhance your weapons.
Powered by Slabs: Your arsenal isn’t limited to the iron you’re packing. As you face off against Visionaries, you’ll be able to relieve them of their Slabs – strange objects that provide potent supernatural abilities like teleportation, super strength, invisibility and more. Each Slab also has four upgrades to enhance and alter its capabilities. Kill a Visionary once to get their Slab. Kill them again to get the upgrades.
Finders keepers: Once you acquire a great weapon or ability, you’re going to want to to keep it. Thankfully, you’ll gain the ability to do just that fairly early on. Once you unlock the ability to store Residuum, you can spend it to keep your weapons, powers and Trinkets across cycles. The best way to get Residuum is by taking out big targets like the Visionaries. You’ll also find strange, shimmering objects all over the island; these, too, can be harvested for Residuum. Residuum doesn’t carry over between cycles, so be sure to spend it. If you die and are revived by Reprise, you can recover your Residuum by returning to your body and reabsorbing it.
Follow the Leads: As you progress through the story you’ll uncover information about the eight Visionaries spread across the island. The goal of the game is to get these Visionaries lined up for the perfect assassination run. But to do that, you’ll have to learn everything about them. Their routines, their secrets, their strengths… Everything you learn about the Visionaries will be automatically stored as Leads for you and can be referenced at any time. Eventually, these Leads will act as step-by-step guides for finding and eliminating the Visionaries. You can approach the Leads in any order you want, tracking and untracking them as you see fit.
Stop and smell the roses: An open window, an overheard conversation, a seemingly unimportant door. As you explore Blackreef, you will find numerous secrets, codes, clues and other bits of info about the different districts and time periods. Helpful intel or gear could be hiding anywhere so look (and listen) around.
Hack the system: Your trusty Hackamajig will be among the first things you acquire in the game. Get familiar with it fast. Use the Hackamajig to hack into electronic devices – turrets, cameras, distraction points, even scout radios – and turn them to your side. Once hacked, these devices can’t be “un-hacked,” meaning they’ll remain friendly until you leave the district. Also, glass can’t stop the Hackamajig. If you can see through it, you can hack through it. If you’re lucky, you might even find a Trinket that lets you turn hackable objects into explosives. Learn more in our Loadouts feature.
Tag, you’re it: Make sure you’re tagging your enemies so you always know where they are. Monitor their patrol routes and wait till they’re in the prime spot for a takedown. Focusing on tagged enemies will tell you more about their combat tendencies and the type of gear they’re carrying. Enemies with particularly good gear will visibly radiate with power.
When in doubt, throw something: Stuck between a rock and hard place? Need to separate a group of enemies to make them easier to pick off? Try tossing glass bottles or hacking particularly noisy devices like phonebooths. Eternalists are easily distracted and will split off to investigate the ruckus.
