DEATHLOOP – Getting to Know Colt

Deathloop_GameEntry.jpg

DEATHLOOP

It’s no surprise that Colt is a mystery.

After all, it’s hard to know much about a guy when he doesn’t know anything about himself. He has no idea who he is; why he’s caught in a timeloop on a frigid, isolated island; why people seem to know him… All he knows is that he’s having a pretty bad day, and he’ll be having a pretty bad day until he can do something about the timeloop. Progressing through DEATHLOOP means uncovering not only the island’s secrets, but the secrets of Colt’s past. For better or worse, Colt’s determined to figure out who he really is and why he’s here.

“The thing that drew me to Colt was that you have this guy who immediately knows that he’s very capable and sure of himself but has no clue what’s going on,” says Jason E. Kelley, the actor who plays Colt. “He barrels into it, chest out, guns blazing, asking questions and he has a sense of humor about it through the entire journey. That’s what I really keyed in on. That sense of stoicism that he has, coupled with his sense of humor, which would pop out in the weirdest places. Bennett [Smith, Narrative Designer] had me lean into that as much as possible and we ended up with a great character to play.”

Supernatural Style

One thing Colt does know about himself? “Damn, I look good.” And that’s all thanks to the exquisite intentionality behind his character design, right down to the tiniest details. As Assistant Art Director and Lead Character Artist Jean-Baptiste Ferder explains it, “Every patch, badge and pin on Colt’s jacket has been created in collaboration with the narration, concept and character art teams. Looking at both Colt and Julianna in detail will reveal some of their motivations and background.”

Everything has a purpose and place, even if Colt doesn’t know it.

“Colt’s primary outfit is straightforward and immediately tells you part of his story,” says Ferder. “We knew early on that we wanted him to be a veteran pilot from the military. He wears an old pilot leather jacket he cherishes (or he would if he could remember why he was wearing it), and heavy leather gloves. Thanks to his background, he knows his way around firearms and how to behave on a battlefield. Even despite his amnesia, his military-trained reflexes will save his life more than once.”

“The leather bomber with ‘Dead Dogs’ on the back? Oh I want that. I would rock that all day long.” – Jason E. Kelley

A Little Something Special

Along with being able to customize Colt’s weapons and abilities , you’ll also be able to switch up his style with unique skins, all inspired by facets of his journey or his personality.

“With Colt’s skins, we designed for a variety of moods,” explains Ferder. “From a super stylish killer in his Italian tailored golden suit, to the self-tattooed hero that references the memory loss-themed thriller Memento, each of his outfits highlights one of his character traits.”

Game Director Dinga Bakaba explains that these skins can be unlocked by playing as Julianna in the PvP. “When you play as Julianna, each time you enter a map to hunt for Colt, you can earn a number of feats. Things like surviving for X minutes or getting headshots or using power combinations. Doing stylish or strategic actions basically. The more you do, the more you rack up what we call Hunter points. With those Hunter points you unlock Julianna’s progression, which is how you get new weapons, powers, upgrades, and Trinkets for her. Every time you unlock these things you have a chance to unlock skins for either Julianna or Colt and all these skins either reflect an aspect of the characters’ personalities or an aspect of the island of Blackreef.”
